Based on cutting-edge research, First Steps in Mathematics develops
and expands teachers’ understanding of mathematics and how children
learn mathematics. First Steps in Mathematics enables teachers
to successfully diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate their students’ learning
experiences in four strands - Number, Measurement, Space, and Chance
and Data. Diagnostic Tasks and Diagnostic Maps within each strand
help teachers to identify students’ misconceptions about mathematics.
Sample lessons and learning activities provide teachers with practical
and simple ideas to support students’ development.
Teachers’ professional judgments about what students understand,
the mathematics to be taught, and what makes effective teaching
will be enhanced through the use of the tools provided in each
First Steps in Mathematics text. Texts include the following tools.
A Diagnostic Map helps
teachers to make judgements about students’ existing understanding
of mathematical concepts and the challenges needed to move students’ thinking
forward.
Key Understandings provide
teachers with a deeper knowledge of the mathematics behind major
outcomes and the steps that students work through as they develop
understandings the strands of Number, Measurement, Space and Chance
and Data.
Learning Activities are
purposeful, practical and easy to implement. They can be used to
develop Key Understandings as well as provide teachers with diagnostic
information about students. Activities are appropriate for individual
students as well as small or large groups.
Sample Lessons describe
actual classroom practice and present examples of how teachers
can develop mathematical ideas through a series of learning activities.
"Did You Know?" Sections
that highlight common understandings and misunderstandings that
students experience.
